My 2 cents on this... there are a bunch of seemingly redundant alpine snowboarding groups on Facebook already, so the scene there is pretty diluted.  Bryan's Alpine Snowboard Trader page is getting a lot of action for used gear sales, however with a big dose of really old nearly useless stuff.  People are also using it like a forum, but I don't think forum members should have to wade through a bunch of classifieds in order to participate.  Establishing a community on Facebook locks you into that model, and Facebook owns all the content.  What if you want to grow that community into a full fledged website with an organized, indexed archive of articles, and then what if you want to organize sessions and sell swag like t-shirts and hats?  The list of concerns goes on.

Basically I really hope Facebook does not become the new home of alpine snowboarding on the web.

Also, the whole bankruptcy situation is ongoing... BOL isn't quite dead yet.  I reject the notion that the Callens just let this happen on purpose.  I am sure both parties are simply doing what they feel is their only choice to protect their interests and livelihoods. Unfortunately those interests are at odds, and BOL, for now, is a casualty.

The biggest problem with Facebook is some people do not want to become a member to access. I for one have never joined Facebook and have no desire to ever use it!!!!

I decided to get on Facebook after years of resisting, but I can't figure out Bryan's Alpine Snowboard Trader page. Simple stuff like looking at the posts with the most recent on top (or are they all that old??). And I used the link Bryan provided for some TD3s for sale, but never found that post. This forum is better suited to my total lack of social media skill/exposure.

Wolf, we are both looking for TD3's (or TD2's in my case would do) as well...

The challenge I have with the facebook page is... although I am in IT for a living, I simply don't do facebook. It has so many tendrals into so much advertising that is makes even a macbook a sled.

I hope this forum picks up the BOL users as this seems fairly intuitive and I give this a thumbs up.

I dumped facebook several months ago for a whole slew of reasons, and I'm very happy that I did though there are downsides. I know a lot of people who have done the same recently ... Facebook just isn't a good place to build any kind of community: there are lots of people who want nothing to do with it, and you have very little control of what you are building ultimately since you are just a digital squatter in facebook's no-rent hotel.

Having a soverign/independent thing like this is the way to go.

FYI: This forum is squatting in the forumotion hotel.  It's not truly independent either.

Sean from Donek suggested it as he used it for the Donek Tools forum with good success.

Sure, but it's a lot more independent than something on facebook, or something belonging to a company that has a financial interest in the market involved ... and I doubt that there is a big contingency of people out there who have decided to boycott forummotion.

Regardless of where it’s hosted for now, the important thing is that the community (or Corey at least) has now ownership of the content on lucid carving. Lets hope that Corey remains a benevolent dictater. One option to help guarantee that the community can’t be held hostage to a single maintainer or hosting company would be to retain one or more backups of the forum’s database on independent computers or hosting services.

PS: I would love it if we could replicate something like the tech articles on bol as they were absolutely invaluable when I was starting out.

Lolz — nope, I just had enough of facebook; which is definitely a double-edged sword for reasons like this. That said: I *think* messenger still works? Maybe not :/

I love that you can designate “foes” on this forum. Sadly, I don’t know what I’d use it for because I usually relish most the posts of those who infuriate me. I still wish you could give some posts the finger...

Thanks for getting this forum up! I had opened the original thread on BOL probably just a day before it got shut down, to check in for the season. I saw there would be a forum somewhere, but I didn't write it down. Next day, poof. I have been searching through facebook and other forums, finally found a link! Whew! Need this community!

So your avatar is merely checking the wind?

Are you still on Hoth, or did you limpet the hull of a departing rebel carrier?

My avatar doesn’t check the wind, it breaks the wind! Still on Hoth but resting cosily in the evacuated thorax of a tauntaun. Something smells like sushi...

google search "mooninites ATHF wikipedia" for those who don't know what a mooninite is.... I would have posted a link, but guess I am still to new here...

This thread has deviated very far from the original topic.  I'm closing out of respect for what Bomber was and hopefully will be again.

We have an off-topic section for non-carving discussions.
